About four years ago, I grew a keyboard TikTok account to around 3.2 million views and 4,000 followers. I stopped posting because I couldn't see a clear way to make money from it in Australia.
I think about that when I'm trying to understand why I struggle with consistency. I've grown an account before, so getting people to watch wasn't the whole problem. I didn't know where I was going with it financially, and eventually I stopped.
I've been more consistent with things where I can see money coming in. I keep adapting because there's clear evidence that the work is paying off. With software and social media, I can spend a lot of time working without knowing how long it will take to see a return.
Going to the gym feels similar in that sense. Progress can take a long time to become obvious. I know there are things worth doing even when the results aren't immediate, and I want to get better at sticking with them.
That doesn't mean I know the keyboard account would have become a business. I still don't know what I would have done with it. I had an audience, but I couldn't see a revenue stream that made sense for me.
I want to build something that can support me over time. It's easy to want more views or followers, but I've already had an account where those numbers alone weren't enough to keep me going. I need to think about what I actually want to do with the attention as well.
