HyperTrack, HyperOdds and HyperRace are all projects I never got around to distributing. I've been thinking about that because not finishing things and moving on to find the next big thing is a pattern I've dealt with for a while.
I get to the distribution stage and start questioning the idea, or someone else's doubts put me off it. Then there's another thing I could build. I want to make better decisions about what deserves my time, but I also need to follow through on the decisions I make.
Wanting to find the flaws first
I'd like to do proper research before building something. I want to find the flaws early, rather than spend time on an idea with holes in it and then struggle to abandon it because I've already done so much work.
The sunk cost part worries me. I don't want the reason I keep going to be that I've spent too long on something to stop. But I also don't want to use every doubt as a reason to move on, especially when I haven't properly tried getting the product in front of people.
I haven't worked out a clear answer to that yet. Some ideas should be dropped. Others probably need more time and effort before I can tell whether they're going anywhere. It's difficult to judge when it's my own project.
When I think about what I'd tell myself in twelve months, it's to stay consistent, keep posting, drop ideas if they're bad, adapt and move on. I want to follow through, and I want to be willing to change direction. Figuring out when to do each is the part I'm still struggling with.
