I have a computer science degree from the University of Adelaide, with a major in cyber security, and I'm still questioning what the best next step is. I'm 22 and I want to make the most of the opportunity I have now.
One thing that worries me is how quickly AI is changing software work. I keep thinking about what that means for junior software engineers and the more routine parts of the job. I don't know how far it will go or how quickly, but it affects how I think about my own options.
At the same time, I want to use the tools available to me to build things. I'd like to grow my portfolio and create income from my own work. That's the direction I'm trying to take, even though I know it comes with uncertainty too.
I don't feel like having the degree has settled the question of what I should do. There are still decisions to make about which projects to pursue, how much time to give them, and whether I'm following through properly.
I want to make the best decisions I can with what I have. I also know I can spend a lot of time questioning them. For now, I'm trying to build my own work into something that gives me more options.
